Cedar Breaks Trailhead
Cedar Breaks Trailhead:
Address: 2100 Cedar Break Parks Rd.
Cedar Breaks to Tejas
Heading west on the trail - the trail starts out going up a hill into the trees and is rocky and gets more rocky -little knobs of limestone which can be a pain if mountain biking. This section is highly used by casual hikers that often throw their trash on the ground. It can also be muddy if it has rained recently. The terrain is somewhat hilly, some shade, some sun. At about 4 1/2 miles there is primitive camping at Cedar Hollow Camp. I have never camped here so I am not sure what it is like.
You can park outside the gate for free. There may be a small fee if you park inside the gate. Once you enter the gate the parking lot is the first right where the trail begins.
Cedar Breaks to Overlook TH:
If you want to hike over the dam you will need to go outside the manned gate (near the free parking) and down the hill. There is a small opening to the right of the unmanned bar gate where you can enter by foot. Once you cross the dam you can go right to Stilling Basin Trailhead which you can see the parking lot down below when walking across the dam. Or you can go left which will take you down to Overlook Trailhead.
Cedar Breaks Park - has covered picnic tables and a boat launch. No swimming area, no camping.
Overlook Park Trailhead
There are two parking areas: One at the gate entrance close to the dam. Go past the first parking lot down the hill to the second one. If you are doing a day hike park at one of these lots. The gate closes at dark. No fees. If you are doing a thru hike and starting here you may want to park at HEB on Williams.
Overlook to Jim Hogg:
There are multiple "trails" but finding the correct one is a little tricky. The one straight out from the restrooms takes you straight down to the water. There is not a swimming area here. Many people have jumped off the cliffs during high lake level periods. Some have lived to warn others of the dangers and some have not. Find a trail that heads west (right - if coming out of the restroom). When the trail splits as it will several times, go right. But do not take the jeep trail - not sure where that goes. But if you do end up on the jeep trail take a left whenever you see a small trail that is treesy. You will know you are on "the trail" when it is following alongside the little finger of the lake. It will be sunny and rocky with some shade here and there. It is about 4 miles to Jim Hogg TH.
Overlook to Cedar Breaks:
From the bottom parking lot walk down the hill, go left at the restrooms up the paved trail. When you reach the dam road if you go straight it will take you to Stilling Basin TH. Take a right to acrooss the dam to Cedar Breaks Park. Overlook to Cedar Breaks is about 1 1/2 miles.
Russell Park Trailhead
Parking:
When you get to the first big parking lot before the gate look to the right and you will see an entrance to more parking and the TH. You do not have to go thru the gate. Instead go to the right of the gate and loop back right. Turn left into the circle parking area. This is a good place to park your car for a thru hike. Let the gate attendent know your plans or put a note in your car or it might get towed. No fees.
Russell to Overlook:
Go thru the manned gate trail is to your left. It is not marked. You know you are on the right trail if after just a minute you cross over an old road. Then you will see a trail mileage marker. It is rocky, small hills, mostly shady. Peeks of the lake here and there. A couple of very short, wet areas to get through if there has been rain.
Russell to Tejas:
TH will be west in the circle parking area. So when you drive into the circle the TH is straight ahead. It is shady and rocky for about 1 1/2 miles. Peeks of the lake through the trees. Then the trail opens up to a Jeep trail and you can see the end of the lake which turns into San Gabriel River. This section is mostly sunny with shade at Walnut Springs primitive camping. A nice place to camp. It is about 6 miles from Russell Park to Tejas Park.
Tejas Park Trailhead
Tejas Park Trailhead:
Address: 4400 CR 258 Georgetown, TX
Tejas to Cedar Breaks
Going east toward Cedar Breaks the trail starts out flat, not rocky for about 2 miles. The first mile or two you will see people but not many casual hikers go more than that.
If you want to do a short loop: At about 1 1/5 miles you will see a trail to the left - go 1/8 mile and you can get down to the water. If it is not flooded, you can cross a low water crossing bridge and make a loop (3 mile loop) back to Tejas Park.
If you continue towards Cedar Breaks you will go up a pretty good size hill and you will be on a shady ridge for a mile or so then it drops down and up down and up. At 4 1/2 miles you can look for Sawyer Hollow Camp. Look to the right if you see a very rustic open toilet seat you have fond the camp. Camp is closer to the water downhill from the toilet.
From Sawyer Hollow Camp the trail has varied terrain and you may have to cross a wet area with tall grass that is very short distance.
Tejas to Russell:
It is almost 6 miles from Tejas Park Trailhead to Russell Park Trailhead.
From the parking lot, walk over the bridge and then go right on the trail, you will be heading towards Russell Park Trailhead. This section is mostly flat jeep trails with a few small hills. Most of it is sunny for the first 2-3 miles. Once the trail goes to single track you will have some shade and it will be somewhat rocky.
At about 4 miles you can camp at Walnut Spring primitive camping. Very pretty spot with large oaks and a view of the San Gabriel River. There are picnic tables, and a place to hang your pack to keep animals out.
Tejas Park - has camping, compost toilets, no showers, access to San Gabriel River for swimming, floating (if enough water). No charge for day use. Good parking lot and parking along the road. Camp host on site.
